Lessons/Instruction is given individually or in small groups
(Digital Audio), either at my
studio or in your own home, whichever is more convenient. Courses
can be tailored to individual needs, but typically last 8 weeks with
weekly 60~90min lessons.
My goal is to build up your basic knowledge of digital audio and electronic music so that you can improve and share your musical output and navigate the electronic music market with confidence as you develop your music production capabilities. I also ensure that students have the opportunity to remain in touch with each other, as we build a locally based support community of musicians enjoying using their PC's for creating music.
1. Foundation Course for Sound, Digital Audio and Tools of the Trade:
The physical nature of sound; how we hear sound and process it; musical instruments; analog and digital formats; where the PC fits in; what software is available, what it does and how it works; how does a "home studio" work, what are all the components - and how much does it cost?
2. Digital Recording, Post Production and Mastering 101, 102:
Microphones and simple recording; post production
techniques - mixing, balancing, using compression, EQ and ambient
spatial effects. Making CD's; DVD's; music for the web; music and sound
in Flash; compression; file sizes and compressed audio formats;
combining music with video; scores; foleys; synchronizing audio and
video
3. Creative Electronic Music - Composition with MIDI and other tools 101, 102:
Elements of music theory; the concept of events; how MIDI relates to the musical score; channels; note events; channel events; working with sequencers; the piano roll; controllers; communicating with synthesizers; score writing programs
4. Creative Electronic Music - Creating Original Sounds, Synthesis 101, 102:
Electronic Instruments; parametric synthesis; describing sounds; building sounds; envelopes; filters; FM synthesis; sampling and subtractive synthesis; timbral behavior - pitch, gesture; other controllers; organizing sound libraries
